‘But I don’t understand!’ cried King Cudgel. His eye strayed to the portrait of his dear wife, the great Queen Carrion, who’d been missing ever since she’d set off on a bear-hunting trip on her own.

‘Her mother never wanted to be one of those queens in fairy tales.’

Even the memory of Queen Carrion and her terrible temper made Crackle nervous. ‘You mean kind and lovely and always ready with the brimming goblet?’ he gulped.

‘Something like that,’ muttered King Cudgel. He sighed. ‘So what am I supposed to do about Princess Gusty Ox?’

‘Tell her how beautiful she looks. No matter what.’

King Cudgel swallowed a whole handful of sugar lumps in one go and nodded.
